Sarasota High grad 'plays the game right'

SARASOTA, Fla. – Of the now 14 players the Sarasota High baseball program has sent to the majors, Ryan “Scooter” Gennett does not fit the profile.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound second baseman is the 14th player and 7th position player from the Sailors to appear in the big leagues.

He also is the shortest and one of the lightest.

“With his approach to the game, that has never been a factor for him,” Sarasota baseball coach Clyde Metcalf. “He is a strong young man. He swings the bat hard. The ball comes off his bat very well.”

If there is a major league player Gennett can be compared to, it is Boston’s Dustin Pedroia, a 5-8, 165-pound second baseman for the Boston Red Sox.

“Because of his size, he didn’t fit the major league profile, but he overcame that,” said Metcalf, who exchanged texts with Gennett on Monday. “He worked hard. He’s a consummate baseball player. He works year round on his game. He doesn’t take a lot of time off.

“He’s a guy you can root for.”

The 23-year-old Gennett made his major league debut Monday night as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning of the Brewers’ 10-2 loss to Oakland at Miller Park. The left-handed hitter grounded out to pitcher Jesse Chavez.

Tuesday, Gennett will make his first major league start, playing second base and batting eighth against Oakland right-hander A.J. Griffin.

Gennett is expected to serve as the left-handed hitting platoon with right-handed hitting Richie Weeks at second base for the Brewers.

In three-and-a-half seasons in the minors, Gennett batted .309, .300, 293 and .297 in 50 games this season for Triple-A Nashville.

“He plays the game right and gets after it,” Metcalf said of Gennett. “I’m glad to see him take the next step.”
