HTPreps 2014' All-Area Baseball Team


Dalton Guthrie, Venice Senior

Shortstop batted .393 and played excellent defensively. Named Class 6A Player of the Year by Florida Dairy Farmers. Signed to attend the University of Florida. Drafted in the 40th round by Minnesota.



Evan Mendoza, Sarasota Senior

Pitcher/shortstop went 7-2 with 0.78 earned run average with 45 strikeouts and nine walks in 54 innings. Heading to North Carolina State University.



Clyde Metcalf, Sarasota

Guided the Sailors to a 24-4 record, including a pair of wins over 6A state semifinalist Venice. Sarasota won the Perfect Game Showdown in Fort Myers, where Metcalf picked up career coaching victory No. 800 against IMG Academy in the semifinal round. The Sailors defeated DeSoto Central (Miss.) in the final.



Tyler Bench, Palmetto Senior

Left-handed pitcher had a 6-2 record with a 1.70 earned run average with 59 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings. Threw no-hitters against Manatee and Booker. Also batted .302. Heading to State College of Florida.


Brandon Chapman, Sarasota Senior

Catcher batted .335 with 29 runs batted in, 12 doubles and three home runs. Permitted four runners to steal the entire season. Heading to George Washington University.


Justin Cohen, Riverview Junior

Catcher was a top defender and batted .325 with 26 hits, nine doubles, a triple and homer, 14 RBI, 17 walks, an on- base percentage of .394 and slugging percentage of .425


Khalyd Cox, Manatee Senior

Speedy center fielder batted .349 and was an outstanding defender.


Sam Dannheiser, Riverview Senior

Center fielder batted a team-high .368 with 28 hits, 10 runs, four doubles, an on-base percentage of .368 and slugging percentage of .421.


Weston Davis, Manatee Senior

Right-hander posted 6-3 record with a 1.35 earned run with 56 strikeouts in 52 innings. Selected by Washington in the 11th round.


Alex Detweiler, Riverview Senior

First baseman/pitcher batted .330 with 29 hits, 6 doubles and 12 runs batted in.


Rhett Dinka, Venice Senior

First baseman batted .388 with 28 hits and 17 runs and played strong defensively.


Brandon Elmy, Venice Senior

Pitcher/outfielder won three regional playoff games, including a no-hitter and had a 1.80 earned run average while going 6-3 with a 1.83 ERA. Batted .360 with four doubles and two homers. Heading to Furman University.


Travis Glenney, North Port Senior

Infielder batted .361 with 22 hits, 15 runs, five doubles and a .391 on-base percentage.


Ryan Miller, Venice Senior

Center fielder/pitcher batted .382 and served as the Indians’ closer, saving two regional games while posting a 1-0 record and 0.42 ERA. Heading to Florida Atlantic University.


Jerad Pararella, Bayshore Senior

Catcher batted .440 with a .542 on-base percentage with 34 RBI, 23 runs, 15 doubles, a triple 10 walks and four stolen bases.


Cameron Pearcey, Lakewood Ranch Junior

Second baseman hit .368 with 11 runs and led the team with .456 on-base percentage and seven hit by pitches.


Donovan Petrey, Port Charlotte Junior

Outfielder/pitcher batted .405 with 34 hits, 17 runs, 16 RBI, seven stolen bases, seven doubles, a triple, two homers a .515 on-base percentage and .583 slugging percentage. Had 3.10 ERA in eight games with 48 strikeouts in 52 innings.


Mike Rivera, Venice Senior

Catcher batted .325 with seven doubles and made one error. Signed with the University of Florida. Drafted in the 33rd round by Oakland.
