SARASOTA, Fla. - The Major League Baseball season starts this week, meaning the Baltimore Orioles are no longer in town for all to enjoy. That doesn’t mean there’s no baseball you should be watching, however. Sarasota’s high school scene is in full swing, hitting its midseason apex this week with the Sarasota Baseball Classic. For 33 years, the Classic has brought together both local and out-of-region teams, and that’s no different this year. Sarasota baseball facility will be open to all SHS students that plan on trying out for baseball this year

Our baseball facility will be open to all SHS students that plan on trying out for baseball beginning on December 11th. This will give student/athletes an opportunity to prepare themselves for January’s tryouts.

 

The schedule for field and weight room workouts is listed below:

ON FIELD:

December 11-20 (Mon, Wed, Fri) 2:45-4:30pm

December 22 (Fri) 10:00am

WEIGHT ROOM:

December 12-21 (Tue & Thu)

FIELD: (Winter Break)

December 26, 28 & January 2 & 4 (Tue and Thu)

10:00-12:00pm (Weight Room will be open after field work)

ON FIELD:

January 8,10,12 (Mon, Wed, Fri) 2:45-4:30pm

Weight Room: January 9,11 (Tue, Thu)

DEAD PERIOD:

January 15 (Tryouts)  NO ON FIELD ACTIVITY ALLOWED

Weight room on Mon, Wed and Fri.

 

THIS IS STRICTLY A VOLUNTARY PROGRAM AND IS NOT REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION DURING THE REGULAR SEASON.

 

This is open to all students that are eligible for participation at Sarasota High School. You must have all completed paperwork turned into the Athletic Department prior to participation in any activities. Paperwork can be downloaded by Clicking Here.

Tryouts will begin on Monday, January 29th (11th and 12th graders will report at 4:15pm and 9th and 10th graders at 2:45pm). Tryouts will last for 3-4 days; as needed for evaluation. All sessions are MANDATORY unless you are playing another High School sport at SHS. Late tryouts will not be held unless you are playing another sport at SHS or you have prior approval from Coach Metcalf.

Jeremy Schmidt, the new Riverview High Head Baseball Coach

Riverview High School announced that after considering more than 30 candidates, Jeremy Schmidt will be the new Head Coach of the Riverview Baseball program. Jeremy is a former Sailor and after graduating from Sarasota High pitched for Manatee Community College (now called SCF), College of Charleston and played some minor league ball. In 2016, Jeremy was the Head Coach of Booker High leading them to the Regional Final and was named HTPreps “Coach of the Year”. Jeremy will once again be assisted by his brother Jason who is also a former Sailor. Congratulations to both Jeremy and Jason; the Sailor family is very proud of you and we look forward to seeing you on the field.

In this year's 2017 MLB Draft, three former Sarasota Sailors are set to realize their dreams of playing professional baseball. Dylan Busby played his college ball at Florida State University and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 3rd round. Evan Mendoza played his college ball at North Carolina State and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 11th round. Joey Cavallaro played his college ball at the University of South Florida and was drafted by the New York Mets in the 24th round.
